The Quick Answer

A Georgia motorcycle needs its own policy, and we build it on Georgia's **25/50/25 liability** floor; your auto policy does not cover it. Georgia is an **at-fault state** with **no PIP requirement**, so nothing pays your own injuries automatically after a crash. That makes the coverages you choose the important ones: **uninsured/underinsured motorist** for the driver who hits you with little or no insurance, **medical payments** options on your rider policy, and your own health coverage. Georgia has a **universal helmet law**: every operator and passenger must wear approved protective headgear, and **eye protection** is required unless the bike has a windshield. Georgia's riding season runs most of the year, but ask about **lay-up coverage** instead of cancelling if the bike sits for months, plus **custom parts coverage** (defaults are small), **safety apparel** for the four-figure kit, and **guest passenger liability** if anyone rides behind you. **All Access Agency**, a local insurance agency in Morrow, quotes riders free at **[(770) 576-3416](tel:+17705763416)**.

Georgia Motorcycle Insurance, The Short Version

## Georgia gives riders a long season. Build the policy for all twelve months.

Riding here isn't packed into a few summer weekends. Georgia's milder winters mean plenty of riders keep the bike on the road for most of the year: commutes up I-75 and I-675, weekend runs out of the south metro toward Fayetteville and McDonough, and longer trips to the mountains. Some bikes still sit for stretches, through a cold snap, a busy season, or a stretch of summer storms. A good rider policy is built for both: real protection on the road, and a lower-cost lay-up option while it's parked.

Now the part that shapes every recommendation on this page. Georgia is an **at-fault state** with **no PIP requirement**. When a driver causes your crash, you recover from their insurance, and that can take time. If they have little or no coverage, or you're found partly at fault, the money gets thin fast: under Georgia's comparative fault rule, your award shrinks by your share of the blame, and at **50% or more** you recover nothing. So the coverage that pays for *your* injuries is whatever you build. That's why we start with **uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage** and medical payments options, then size liability above the **25/50/25** floor.

Georgia's rider rules are simple to state. Georgia has a **universal helmet law**: every operator and every passenger must wear approved protective headgear (O.C.G.A. 40-6-315). **Eye protection** is required on any motorcycle that isn't equipped with a windshield. No age exceptions.

The rest is making the policy match the bike you actually ride: **custom parts coverage** above the small default, **safety apparel** for the gear, **guest passenger liability** if anyone rides with you, and comprehensive against theft, fire, and Georgia hail and falling trees, on the road and in storage. One call, bundled with the car and the house, and it is usually cheaper than riders expect.

## What a rider policy needs. And the three gaps nobody mentions.

The required part is small. The parts that decide whether a bad day ruins you are the ones you choose.

Required by law

25/50/25

### Liability

Georgia's 25/50/25 liability floor, on the bike's own policy. Covers what you do to others' bodies and property, plus legal defense. In an at-fault state, this is what answers a claim against you, so we treat the minimum as the floor for the conversation, not the recommendation.

Do not skip

UM / UIM

### Uninsured Motorist

Georgia has no PIP requirement, and on a bike you're the crumple zone. Plenty of drivers carry only the minimum, or nothing. This is the coverage that pays when the driver who turned left in front of you cannot. Never sign a rejection of it without talking to us first.

Your Injuries

### Injury Coverage

Georgia is an at-fault state with no PIP requirement, so a rider policy may include nothing for your own medical bills unless you add it. We will show you the medical payments options for your bike and how they fit with your health plan. On two wheels, even a modest get-off means an ambulance.

If you'd miss it

Comp & Collision

### Physical Damage

Repairs or replaces the bike. Comprehensive matters more than riders think: it covers theft, fire, vandalism, hail, and falling trees, and Georgia's spring and summer storms bring plenty of both. Your garage is not coverage, and your carport definitely is not.

Off-season

Lay-Up

### Lay-Up / Seasonal

The right answer instead of cancelling when the bike goes into storage for a few months. Keeps comprehensive alive against theft and fire while suspending what you are not using. Cancelling creates a coverage gap that can raise what you pay later.

Free money

Training

### Safety Course Discount

Many carriers offer a discount for completing an approved motorcycle safety course. It is also the best way to shake off the rust after time off the bike. Safer riding, and often a lower premium. Take it.

Usually a gap

Your Mods

### Custom Parts & Equipment

Standard policies assume a stock bike and cap accessories at a small default. Exhaust, bars, bags, seat, paint, lighting, engine work. Add up what you have spent past stock, then raise the limit to match. It is cheap.

Usually a gap

Your Gear

### Safety Apparel

Helmet, jacket, gloves, boots, armor. It is not part of the bike, so the bike's coverage does not replace it. A full kit runs into four figures and one get-off destroys all of it at once, in the same crash that bent the frame.

Passengers

### Guest Passenger Liability

Some rider policies limit or exclude passenger liability, or make it an add-on. The person on the back is the most likely to be badly hurt in your crash. If you ever carry anyone, this line is not optional.

### Is your bike insured as the bike you actually built?

Mods, gear, and the passenger line are the three we find wrong most often. Send us your declarations page and we will read it with you, free.

The Georgia Rules That Matter

## Four things that change how a claim goes here.

Georgia's at-fault system and rider laws decide what a claim pays and who pays it.

### 1. At-fault means nothing pays you automatically

Georgia has **no PIP requirement**. After a crash someone else caused, your injuries are paid by **their liability insurance**, once fault is sorted out. Georgia generally allows **2 years** to file an injury lawsuit (O.C.G.A. 9-3-33) and **4 years** for damage to the bike (O.C.G.A. 9-3-31). In the meantime, the bills are yours. Build the injury stack deliberately: UM/UIM, medical payments options on your policy, and your own health and disability coverage.

### 2. The 50% rule, and you're the crumple zone

Georgia uses **modified comparative fault** (O.C.G.A. 51-12-33): your award shrinks by your share of the blame, and if you're found **50% or more** at fault you recover nothing from the other driver. Riders often end up arguing over fault after a left-turn or lane-change crash. Your own **uninsured/underinsured motorist** coverage and medical payments are the coverages most likely to pay for *your* hospital stay when the other driver carries little or nothing.

### 3. Helmets and eye protection

Georgia requires approved protective headgear for **every operator and every passenger**, at any age (O.C.G.A. 40-6-315(a)). **Eye protection is required** unless the motorcycle has a windshield (O.C.G.A. 40-6-315(b)). It's the law, and it's the cheapest injury coverage you'll ever buy.

### 4. Your auto policy is not helping

A motorcycle needs its own policy; your car's coverage doesn't extend to it. The upside of doing it properly: bikes rate cheaper than people expect, and bundling the bike with the [auto](https://allaccessagencyga.com/auto-insurance) and [home](https://allaccessagencyga.com/home-insurance) policies usually pays for a chunk of it. One call, one team, the whole garage.

### Let it lapse while the bike sat? Get it back in force before you ride.

A gap can raise your rate, leaves a stored bike exposed to theft and fire, and leaves you bare on the first nice day. One call fixes it.

## Whatever you ride. However you ride it.

A spring-to-fall commuter and a garage-kept restoration are not the same policy. Tell us which one you are.

[### Daily commuters

Riding I-75, I-675, and I-285 to work most of the year means more exposure and more miles, and UM coverage matters most for you because you are surrounded by the drivers who cause the crashes.](https://allaccessagencyga.com/quote)
[### Builds & heavily modified bikes

If your bike left stock a long time ago, the default accessory limit is not close. Custom parts and equipment coverage exists exactly for you, and it costs very little.](https://allaccessagencyga.com/quote)
[### Weekend & back-road riders

Out on the back roads a few times a month and parked the rest. Lay-up options keep theft coverage alive without paying for road exposure you are not using.](https://allaccessagencyga.com/quote)
[### Riders who carry passengers

Guest passenger liability is limited or excluded more often than riders realize. If anyone ever gets on the back, this gets checked before you ride, not after.](https://allaccessagencyga.com/quote)
[### Classics & collectibles

A vintage bike is not worth its depreciated book value and should not be insured as if it were. Agreed value is the conversation, the same as it is for any collector vehicle.](https://allaccessagencyga.com/quote)
[### New riders

Highest risk, lowest experience. Georgia requires a helmet for every rider, and a safety course is the best investment you will make. Start with real limits rather than the legal floor.](https://allaccessagencyga.com/quote)

### One call, and it's usually cheaper than you think.

You ride fewer miles than you drive, and it bundles with the car and the house. Tell us about the bike and we will quote it properly.

## Georgia rider questions. Straight answers.

Is motorcycle insurance required in Georgia?+

Yes. To register and tag a motorcycle in Georgia you need proof of liability insurance, and the floor is **$25,000 per injured person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 in property damage**, the same 25/50/25 limits required on a car.

What's different is everything else. Georgia is an at-fault state with no PIP requirement, so nothing on a minimum policy pays your own injuries. Liability is the legal minimum; the coverage that protects you is up to you.

Does my auto policy cover my motorcycle?+

No.

A motorcycle needs its own policy; your auto policy does not extend to it. The good news is that bike policies are usually cheaper than people expect, since you ride fewer miles than you drive, and bundling the bike with your auto and home trims the whole stack.

Who pays for my injuries after a motorcycle crash in Georgia?+

It depends on fault. Georgia is an **at-fault state** with **no PIP requirement**, so when another driver causes the crash, their liability insurance pays your injuries once fault is settled. Georgia generally allows 2 years to file an injury lawsuit.

Until then, or if they carry too little, your own coverage has to carry you: uninsured/underinsured motorist, medical payments if you add it, and your health insurance. Ask us exactly what injury coverage your rider policy includes, and what it would cost to add more.

What happens if an uninsured driver hits me?+

This is the rider question, because plenty of drivers carry only the minimum, or nothing, and on a bike you are the crumple zone.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage steps into the at-fault driver's shoes and pays for your injuries. Georgia has no PIP requirement, so this is often the coverage that matters most. Ask us about uninsured/underinsured motorist limits, and never sign a rejection of it without understanding what you're giving up.

Do I have to wear a helmet in Georgia?+

**Yes.** Georgia has a universal helmet law: **every operator and every passenger** must wear approved protective headgear, at any age (O.C.G.A. 40-6-315(a)).

**Eye protection** is also required unless the motorcycle has a windshield (O.C.G.A. 40-6-315(b)). We would rather insure you with both on anyway.

Does liability coverage pay for my own injuries?+

No. Liability pays for the people you injure and the property you damage.

Your own injuries are covered by whatever injury coverage you add to your rider policy, your health insurance, and, when the other driver is at fault and uninsured or underinsured, your UM/UIM coverage. Because Georgia has no PIP requirement and bars recovery if you're 50% or more at fault, building that injury stack deliberately matters more on a bike than on any car.

Are my custom parts and accessories covered?+

Only up to a small default limit, and most bikes wear real money: pipes, bars, seats, luggage, chrome, paint.

Custom parts and equipment coverage raises that limit to match reality, and it is cheap. Bring us the receipts, or at least an honest list, and we will size it properly.

Is my riding gear covered?+

Not automatically. Your helmet, jacket, gloves, boots, and armor are not part of the motorcycle, so the bike's physical damage coverage does not replace them.

A full kit runs into four figures and one get-off destroys all of it at once. Safety apparel coverage exists for exactly this, and it costs little.

Is my passenger covered?+

Check, do not assume. Guest passenger liability covers the person on the back, the one most likely to be seriously hurt in your crash and whose family is most likely to file the claim.

Some policies include it, some do not. If you ever carry anyone, make sure yours does.

Can I drop coverage while the bike is parked?+

You can, but it is usually the wrong trade. A stored bike can still be stolen, catch fire, or get damaged in the garage, all comprehensive claims, and a coverage gap can raise what you pay when you start riding again.

Georgia's riding season runs most of the year, but if your bike sits for months, ask about a lay-up or storage option instead. It suspends what you are not using while keeping comprehensive alive. Cancelling outright saves less than you think.

Will a safety course lower my rate?+

Often, yes. Many carriers offer a discount for completing an approved motorcycle safety course, and it is the best way to sharpen skills, especially for new riders and anyone getting back on after time away.

Safer riding, and often a lower premium. Take it.

Do scooters and mopeds need insurance too?+

Small displacement does not shrink the liability: a 150cc scooter can put a pedestrian in the hospital as effectively as a liter bike.

Coverage for scooters is inexpensive. Tell us what you ride and we will confirm what it needs and place it correctly.
